I was in an entertainment duo with my sister. We covered many songs from Bon Jovi to Patsy Cline singing to backing tracks and having a laugh with the audience.
We were quite popular locally and were never short of work.
The trouble is, it takes a lot of energy to do what we did and the older you get, the more difficult it becomes. Although the “entertaining” side of things was wonderful, the equipment we carried started to become heavier and heavier and I lost confidence with my driving. So, at the end of 2007 we hung up our mikes and called it a day.
After sitting here for nine months, getting fatter and older, I decided I wanted to continue to do what I knew best. And that was singing and entertaining. So I decided I wanted to settle down from the "partying" gigging and now "do" jazz and swing. I have much smaller equipment and singing this type of music is what I was made for. I love it. I now sing in care homes and have a great time. I am now called Shirley Sheldon, the jazz singer. Have a listen and see what you think:
